Woop woop! Stories to Wear has officially received funding from the UK Arts Council. Bearing such a wonderful endorsement in mind, I thought I had better write a bit of a formal outline of the project to share with the world. Stories to Wear…… read on.
Common Threads explores stories of place through the medium of interactive, site specific sustainable textile design. I draw on geographical stories, and then design textile prints. Using these designs, I plan to make garments that enable people to interact with sustainable narrative garments, each other and place.
The interactive garments will tell the people’s stories of sanctuary through the printed surface of the garment. They will also join to create a temporary story telling dwelling, linking audiences to the site of the story.
The stories I aim to illustrate are stories of sanctuary, rooted in landscapes around the UK.
I am particularly interested in collating and re telling the stories of single mothers and people aged over 70. I will be working specifically with people from these groups, as I feel their voices are often under represented in the public arts today.
The project will culminate in an 8 date tour, with project presentations and walkabout installations being delivered at the following events:
Beatroot Cafe, Bristol – Fri 6th June
Embercombe – Sun 15th June
Bristol Green Week – Sat 21st June
Tagore Festival, Schumacher College – Sat 28th and Sun 29th June
Gypsy Caravan Theatre – Sat 5th July
Secret Garden Party – Sat 26th July
Smugglers Cove Festival – Sat 30th August
Boiling Wells Community Orchard – tbc
