If you only think of white flowers in the toilet

by Caitlin

I visited Alcatraz on Sunday, and at it Ai Wai Wai’s @Large exhibition. It was very good. I’ll write more about that later. The installation that moved me the most was Blossom; which saw medical detainee cell toilets, washbasins and bath tubs decorated with ornate white porcelain bouquets. The exhausted interior, and oppressively small cells led me to question; what sort of thought processes would keep you sane and stable if your life was spent physically locked in a cell. I thought the placement of the procelain flowers was a likely symbol of hope, and escape to better places. Especially the ones overflowing from the toilet bowl.
