The meaning of a door

by Caitlin

As part of my practice based research project, I’ve been walking around Bristol, London, Machynlleth, Hebden Bridge; wherever I go I’ve started documenting the significance of front doors. The first insight into the identity and lives of those who live behind the entrance. Ranging from elegant and sleek to shambolic, falling apart and in disarray. I’m interested in the semiotics of the front door, and how class identity, aspiration and privilege is conveyed in the materiality of a door.

Doors are a big feature of my upcoming docu-fiction project, Discord. The experience is an immersive exploration into the haves and the have nots of housing security, which will be exhibited at Somerset House between August – October this year.
